Transdermal medication delivery refers to self-contained, discrete dosage forms that, when applied to undamaged skin, release the drug to the systemic circulation through the skin at a controlled rate. Ethosomes are noninvasive drug delivery systems comprised of phospholipids, water, and high concentrations of ethanol that allow medications to reach deep into the epidermal layers or the systemic circulation. This review article provides an overview of the composition, preparation method, evaluation, and applications of ethosomes as well as their structure, benefits, and drawbacks.
